“Grand Bal” presents the widest selection ever shown of works by Ann Veronica Janssens, one of the most renowned artists of her generation on the international scene. The exhibition charts a path through Janssens’s multidisciplinary practice, retracing how she has explored the boundary between sculpture and architecture through a series of historical works and site-specific projects that engage with Pirelli HangarBicocca’s industrial setting.
Janssens investigates space and the complexity of sensory perception, altering the former factory by introducing sunlight into the Navate for the first time through openings in the ceiling and along the building’souter wall. As evoked by the title, this creates a choreography of dancing light that shifts and changes throughout the day. This immersive environment allows visitors to experience the tangible and intangible qualities of natural elements, as in Janssens’s famous fog room MUHKA, Anvers—presented in Italy for the first time since its installation at the Biennale Arte 1999 in Venice—and her new light sculpture for PHB, conceived specifically for Pirelli HangarBicocca. Janssens’s significant body of work is highlighted by this publication, which retraces her four-decade career through in depth essays and a rich iconographic apparatus. With this show and catalogue, Pirelli is committed to supporting the research of an artist whose technological and scientific experimentation sparks connections between different disciplines, employing a visual language that is strikingly original.
