Conceived more as a monograph than a traditional catalogue, the publication by Marsilio Arte accompanies the exhibition at Punta della Dogana – Pinault Collection (April 6 – November 23, 2025). It is curated by Jean-Marie Gallais and Camille Morineau, with graphic design by French designer Lisa Sturacci.

A rich iconographic section, enhanced by installation views from the exhibition, complements the numerous written contributions.

The essays by Jean-Marie Gallais (“Reaching Silence”: Thomas Schütte and the Making of Works) and Antonia Boström (Thomas Schütte, Genealogies and Expression) respectively analyze Schütte’s artistic practice—deeply intertwined with the materiality of his works, whether three-dimensional or two-dimensional—and his sculptural work from a historical perspective, focusing on how his life experiences, his attention to other artists’ work, and historical events have shaped his artistic language, both intentionally and inadvertently.

Camille Morineau’s essay, “Everything Starts with Paper,” invites readers into a sort of dialogue with the artist, offering a true discovery of his body of drawings, some of which are previously unpublished. The many drawings and watercolors are presented in a special section printed on different paper, revealing a more intimate aspect of the artist’s long-standing practice.

At the heart of the narrative is the Sculptures section, where various types of Schütte’s works from the Pinault Collection take us into the core of his artistic output, tracing its evolution from one room to another at Punta della Dogana—thanks also to loans from the artist’s own collection. Each category is presented with detailed entries and archival or specially commissioned images.
