A dialogue between classical, baroque and contemporary art is what emerges from the combination of Louise Bourgeois’s works with the masterpieces in the collection of the Galleria Borghese in Rome, whose rooms host the historical exhibition Louise Bourgeois. The unconscious of memory, open to the public from 21 June to 15 September 2024.
Marsilio Arte publishes a catalogue on the occasion of the exhibition, curated by Cloé Perrone, Geraldine Leardi and Philip Larratt-Smith. Louise Bourgeois. The unconscious of memory emphasizes the artist’s profound contribution to sculpture, in dialogue with the historical collection and architecture of the Borghese Gallery.
Louise Bourgeois, who died in 2010 in New York at the age of 98, is one of the most influential artists of recent decades. She began working in Italy in 1967, a stay that marked a significant turning point in her career, inspiring her to shape new forms and experiment with new materials as creative means, creating some of her most innovative and iconic works.
The exhibition explores the themes of memory, metamorphosis and emotionality, creating a bridge between past and present through the juxtaposition of contemporary and classical works. The emblematic sculptures and installations Cells, its iconic structures-envelope, metaphors of space and our very existence, in bilico between the “inside” and the “outside”, visible at the Borghese Gallery and part of Bourgeois’s latest production – reflect the continuous exploration of complex personal and collective issues.
