La bohème sees the elevation to the stage of a “slice of contemporary life”, which in the past had never been considered a worthy subject. Everyday objects (pictures, chimneys, seats, keys, bonnets…) are continually referred to in the stage directions and dialogues. The modern metropolitan world described by Puccini's libretto writers is thus far removed from the abstract, imaginary spaces of serious romantic opera, which preferred to omit details and only included lofty, refined artefacts.
A further new feature of the libretto was the division into quadri (pictures) rather than acts and scenes. Within each quadro there is no longer the usual division into recitativo and passages with lyrical verses intended for the outpouring of song but rather a very noble and flexibly asymmetric versification creating a non-periodical musical syntax.
