Marsilio and art: a story that spans two generations
Marsilio Arte was born out of the experience Marsilio, a publishing house that is part of the Feltrinelli group, which has always been involved in the production of art and photography catalogues and illustrated books, had working with Civita Tre Venezie and its partners (Fondazione di Venezia and Opera 20, a Costa Edutainment company) as part of a coordinated project.
The Marsilio Editori publishing house
Marsilio Editori is one of the biggest Italian publishing houses for fiction, non-fiction and illustrated books, led by the De Michelis family and today part of the Feltrinelli group. The Marsilio catalogue now has more than 8,000 published titles, 3,000 of which are still available, with around 250 new releases a year.
Care and attention to quality, varied series, scientific research, collaborations with important entities, thinkers, philosophers, intellectuals have always characterised Marsilio’s work.
Marsilio Editori was founded on 23 February 1961 (the name is a tribute to Marsilius of Padua, the 14th century philosopher, thinker and Ghibelline legal theorist) based on the idea of a group of friends who had recently graduated. In 1969, when Cesare De Michelis (who had already worked with the publishing house for years) took over the management of Marsilio, he kicked off an expansion phase that would lead to great success.
In fact, since the 1980s Marsilio has recorded uninterrupted growth by developing the various sectors it works in, with new proposals and editorial ideas. In October 2017 the Feltrinelli group bought a stake in Marsilio, which reached 55% in July 2020. A fundamental partnership for the sharing of specific skills and know-how in editorial choices and the promotion of Marsilio’s publishing products by the Feltrinelli group.
Venice
Venice, with its public and private museums, which house a treasure trove of inestimable value, with the research work of its universities, with its numerous national and international foundations that invest in showcasing and protecting the city’s historical-artistic heritage, stands out today as one of our country’s examples of excellences in the field of cultural and, in particular, in the visual arts
Being in Venice, working in Venice, means being in the middle of a place capable of serving up the biggest artistic events of our time, of attracting world-famous artists, of organising and conceiving events, exhibitions and talks of the highest quality.
Marsilio Arte, which operates at a national level, has chosen, despite the obvious management and sustainability difficulties and the challenges that this city poses, to remain in Venice, in its historic city centre, with the prospect of continuing to cultivate and develop lasting synergies and collaborations with many of its prestigious institutions.
