A century and a half of Pirelli's innovations through stories, testimonies, and representations.
In a four-part narrative, the centuries-old history of Pirelli is traced, highlighting elements of continuity in the company's approach, which has always remained at the top of the rubber industry both in Italy and abroad.
The collaboration with the academic world, the pioneering role in economic and technical-scientific development, as well as in marketing and communication strategies for processes and products, are constant elements of Pirelli's research and activity.
Essays by Marco Tronchetti Provera, Maria Cristina Messa, Ferruccio Resta, Guido Saracco and Antonio Calabrò – key figures in the Pirelli Foundation and in several national institutions – introduce the reader to the themes dear to the company and offer a comprehensive look at its identity.
Numerous contributions from exponents of different fields of knowledge, from literature to technology, from music to biology, from medicine to economics, outline a history of continuous innovation and progress.
Visions, the volume's first chapter, tells through essays by Ian McEwan, Sir Geoff Mulgan and David Weinberger the challenges Pirelli intends to face to find itself prepared for the technological, cultural and work-related changes of the world to come.
Identity, the heart of the book, traces Pirelli's studded with success history, starting from its founding, through the difficult years of the two wars, and arriving at the challenges of today and tomorrow. With contributions from Ernesto Ferrero, Giuseppe Lupo, Monica Maggioni, Claudio Colombo, Bruno Arpaia, Maurizio Boiocchi, Enrico Albizzati, Pierangelo Misani, Renzo Piano and Salvatore Accardo.
In Transformations, the texts by Juan Carlos De Martin, Ermete Realacci, Father Enzo Fortunato, and Paola Dubini investigate the changes needed to be prepared for the future.
The Research section consists of a photographic reportage by Carlo Furgeri Gilbert entirely dedicated to the tire, which tells a story through images of the raw materials used in production and the increasingly sophisticated processes involved to arrive at a safe, sustainable, and innovative product.
With 200 color illustrations, archival materials and previously unpublished texts, the volume represents the most comprehensive and in-depth experience on the history of the Milan-based company. The book's release is part of the schedule of the company's 150th anniversary celebrations, which will take place throughout 2022.
